You only have to stand on the shores of Marbella and the Costa del Sol, and gaze out across the silky, smooth waters of the Mediterranean Sea to realise that this is a fabulous area for boating. Moreover, Plus, the presence of upmarket marinas at Málaga, Puerto Banús and Sotogrande, plus the redevelopment of the port at Marbella, means that attractive moorings are available all along the coast.

This trend is likely to continue, as recent figures show that Málaga province has overtaken Cádiz for the number of new registrations of pleasure craft. Great news for yacht sales companies, who have seen registrations rise by 25% in the first five months of 2015. Within Málaga province, Marbella is leading the way for yacht registrations, which is not surprising given the fame and status of the marina at Puerto Banús. Indeed, it now occupies fourth place in Spain behind the Balearic Islands, Barcelona and Girona.

While sales rose by 14% in Marbella alone this year, it’s not only yacht ownership that is growing – yacht chartering is buoyant as well. In the rentals sector, motorboats and medium-sized vessels are the most desired, which industry experts attribute to a clientele looking for smaller, practical vessels as a way of economising on fuel costs.

Who is primarily interested in buying or renting yachts? According to data from the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, Europeans and clients from the Middle East are most interested in putting out to sea, although the organisation says that Spaniards are beginning to take more interest in yachting again, and that this may well grow further as the economy continues to improve.

It has also been noticed that yacht owners who have been storing boats on land during the recession are starting to bring them back to the marinas. So far, things are looking up for the boating world especially in Marbella; every reason then to head out into the Mediterranean and discover this coastal region from a new perspective, because The Costa del Sol, just made for yachting!

The world of sailing, water sports, rent or purchase of recreational boats and luxury yachts is closely linked to the level and lifestyle that Marbella offers in the heart of the Costa del Sol.
