Fine dining in Marbella

November 17th 2014 | by Ginés García

Marbella is known for its resort hotels, golf courses, beach clubs and marinas such as glamorous Puerto Banús, but it is also a centre of first-class services ranging from medical clinics, spas and yoga centres to gyms, fashion, interior design and fine dining.

What’s more, as befits such a cosmopolitan destination set within an ancient Andalusian cultural backdrop, this is a place that offers a wide range of international cuisines and experiences built around the solid foundations of traditional Andalusian cooking and the dynamic contemporary Spanish gastronomy scene.

The latter has been growing in stature in recent decades and now Spain ranks proudly among the leading culinary nations of the world. While much of this Michelin-starred activity is centred in the Basque and Catalan regions, Marbella too has its share of exquisite eateries – many of them run by renowned chefs such as Dani García.

This local star is an exciting genius whose creations include Bibo and the Dani Garcia Restaurant at the Puente Romano Hotel, as well as chic modern gastro-tapas bars such as La Moraga in Puerto Banús. The two-star chef who creates modern haute cuisine experiences based upon the traditional Andalusian kitchen and ingredients faces stiff competition from other illustrious eateries such Skina and El Lago.

Though they represent the pinnacle this is merely the tip of the iceberg in a fine dining offering that also includes exciting modern restaurants such Mesana in Marbella town and the exquisite Kabuki Raw at the luxury Finca Cortesin resort. Perhaps the finest of the many good Japanese restaurants in the region – which also include the delightful Sushi des Artistes – Kabuki Raw takes it to another level of sophistication and pleasure.

Another popular Asian kitchen in Marbella is represented by stylish Thai restaurants such as Sukhotai, while Tai Pan offers Chinese cuisine in the kind of refined setting that makes it feel fresh and new. The British influence in this region ensures that Indian food is also well represented, while Mexican, Brazilian and Lebanese eateries are not forgotten either. For the latter, try L’Oriental, a reference for Middle Eastern cuisine in pleasant surroundings where the belly dancers enhance the sense of authentic Beirut.

Naturally there is also a great choice of classic French and Italian cuisine, with such establishments as L’Impronta, Albert & Simon, Casanis, Casa Mono, Alexandre and ZoZoi just a few of the many that warrant a visit. However, amid all the different gastronomic traditions it is the indigenous Spanish one that cannot be missed, ranging from country ‘venta’ restaurants offering hearty traditional dishes to avant-garde restaurants, asador brasseries and seafood restaurants, and of course, the classic tapas bars – the ultimate venue for sharing food and good times with a glass of excellent Spanish wine or fino.

From the latest and most sophisticated nouvelle cuisine to charming and informal surroundings, Marbella and its surroundings have something to satisfy every kind of food lover’s palate.
