The Golden Mile – Marbella’s golden address

July 14th 2014 | by Ginés García

The Golden Mile, which evolved out of the Marbella Club Hotel that formed the original luxury resort on this coastline, is where it all began. Indeed, this elegant palm-lined avenue that links downtown Marbella with Puerto Banús is at the very heart of Marbella’s rapid evolution into one of the most glamorous jet-set destinations on the Mediterranean.

Many modern cities have evolved along transport arteries that link their centre with commercial and residential areas, yet in the case of Marbella the outward spread from a small fishing village into a vibrant, cosmopolitan resort town followed the path of an immaculate boulevard bordered by opulent resort hotels and private mansions.

What in other places has been dubbed a ‘millionaire’s row’ was lovingly called La Milla de Oro – the Golden Mile – by those who first visited the legendary Marbella Club Hotel and built luxury villas in its environs. The heyday of this period was the 1950s and 60s, when Marbella first became the playground of an international elite of aristocrats, tycoons and film stars.

Though times have changed and Marbella has grown bigger, the appeal of the region remains as strong as ever thanks to a sunny climate whose rich light intensifies the beauty of the natural surroundings and makes possible one of the most desirable lifestyles anywhere in Europe.

Today the Golden Mile remains a beautiful avenue flanked by landscaped gardens, luxury villas and beachside apartments, the Marbella Club Hotel and its sibling the Puente Romano, with its elegant tennis club, and a stylish collection of boutiques, restaurants and cafés. On the coastal side you will find some of the most exquisite properties in the region, ranging from beachside mansions to top-of-the-market apartments, while the residential areas on the ‘mountainside’ of the road offer a great variety of options within their gently undulating greenery (Nagüeles, Camojan,…)

These include large private villas on sizeable private grounds (Sierra Blanca), exclusive gated communities and immaculate, high-spec apartment complexes with a long list of amenities. This area is also home to charming communities such as Las Loma de Marbella Club, an urbanisation designed in the style of an Andalusian village, complete with charming apartments, townhouses and villas ensconced within pathways, gardens and pretty squares.

Such is the diversity of one of Marbella’s great landmarks – and the spot from which its story as a luxury destination first took root.
