Marbella celebrates the national day of Germany

October 3rd 2017 | by Ginés García

Today Marbella celebrates the German National Holiday, the German call ‘Tag Der Deutschen Einheit’. This celebration takes place every 3rd of October since 27 years ago when the reunification of the country was celebrated after the fall of the wall of Berlin.

A day like this, but in 1990, the reunification agreement was signed, in which the two Germans, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) became one country. After the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November 1989, this is the second key date that marks the end of the four decades of division.

After the borders were opened, the citizens of both German states were able to travel freely from one place to another. At this time, the slogan Wir sind das Volk became Wir sind ein Volk (we are a people).

Since then, Germany has changed a lot, which can be seen especially in Berlin. The city, once divided by the Wall, has become an international city.

In Marbella live around 3,000 German citizens

Although Berlin is the epicentre of the celebrations, where citizens take to the streets in traditional costumes to enjoy this day, we also celebrate this important day in Marbella. The German colony is one of the most important in our city. There are about 3000 German citizens to whom we must add many who spend here in Marbella much of the year as the second residence.
